Go BBC

I love the way the BBC has laid out all their podcasts. The kids have enjoyed the Megamaths one in particular.

The BBC website also made me realize that Google Reader can also be used for podcasts, a fact which I had missed somehow.

Cutting the Cable

TAGS: None

I am completely ready to cut off paid TV from my life too.

Between Hulu, the quality of HD over the air and Netflix I think my TV watching needs are totally taken care of.

So what have I done instead? I got DirecTV. I got it so people can watch TV at the cabin. I personally hate TV at the cabin. I think people who watch TV at the cabin should have their head examined.  A movie is one thing, but basic channel surfing at the cabin seems unimaginative at the very least. Anyway, it’s not for me it’s for the cabin renters, I’ll live with it at least until my DirecTV obligation is over.

If you want to turn yourself off of watching TV you should get DirecTV. There are too many channels, most of which are blank, in a different language or pay-per-view that channel surfing is a waste. The interface is dreadful – seriously is reminds of the old AOL client, but worse. How hard would it have been to hire someone from perennial money loser Tivo? You have to spend a ridiculous amount of time creating a custom list of favorite channels just to manage it somehow.

To top off my ire, I really have no idea what this is costing me. There is a thicket of rebates, special 9 – 12 month bonus plans and bundling options which blur together. As near as I can tell they are paying me for nine months.

New Wave

TAGS: None

So everyone and his brother has seen the Google Wave video by now I hope.

I love the ideas embedded in this app. While the UI isn’t perfect, the functionality is really nice. I am really looking forward to spending some time looking at the API and thinking about what could be built with it.

As someone who gives demos I’m also quite struck by the way that Lars and Stephanie presented together. I’m used to presenting with another person, but it’s usually in a more structured fashion. What I like about this is that it’s a presentation woven into a demo rather than presentation followed by demo. Wonder how much time they put into this?

Looks a lot more exciting than anything I’ve seen from Redmond in a while.
